This article is great and very helpful! I agree that a pricing video is a good idea. A video discussing and explaining price information is much more interesting than just an image or plain display. Videos are also effective on websites as it allows the company to connect with the potential customer.
You may also notice that Chen takes a different approach to social proof. He does not advertise the number of subscribers to his list but rather mentions recommendations from Wired magazine and 500 Startups.
If you want to know another way of how to make easy money, check out phone apps that pay you. Similar to paid surveys, you can also use smart phone apps which will pay you money for small tasks. The money is low but this is a way to use time constructively when you are waiting in a queue, on the train, etc. There are several money-making apps including Swagbuck and Google Opinion Rewards (for android phones).
This is also common. Remember, if you want people to join your email list, you need to give them a reason to join. And if you’re not giving away a discount, the next best thing is this: give away content.
There’s no doubt that you can make money with freelance writing, but it’s a process. Once you start building your portfolio and your writing skills, you can start making some serious money. If you’re not an experienced writer, expect to put some time in before you really start to see some dough.
If you have a passion project, Kickstarter may be exactly what you need to get it off the ground. Celebs like Zach Braff and Melissa Joan Hart have used this site in attempts to fund their movie projects. Some crack dealers in Canada inspired a “crackstarter” campaign from Gawker for pictures of the Toronto mayor smoking crack with them. All you need is a dream, a goal, a budget, and a great pitch to convince people to come to the site and donate to your Kickstarter campaign. Panhandling isn’t dead – it’s gone digital…
Netflix changes its background image based on what movies and shows are being promoted. Their site is very simple. There’s a risk reversal right off the bat. You can cancel any time and not be locked into anything. You can try it free for a month. They’re not saying, “Hey, this is movies streaming online.” They’re relying on the power of their brand.
Harvest hasn’t changed its sales funnel much since last time I covered. It still offers a 30-day free trial. They do get traffic from their blog, but a lot of traffic is probably from referrals, too. They’re pretty popular. We’re still a customer.
The key to success with eBooks is to create value, and write non-fiction. Simply bundling information you have researched and complied on a common problem (eg. ‘secrets’ to finding a job) and then presenting it in an easy to digest format (an eBook) justifies someone spending a few quid on it.
Hey Ferranstone, I’m sorry if you got offended in any way by my article. By using the word “he” I actually refer to both genders (men and women). So I’m not neglecting you, if that’s what you think 🙂
Give some, but not all. Whether you’re providing writing samples, a photography portfolio or links to your work, give them enough examples to get the idea, but not so many that they don’t even know where to start. And while we’re on the topic, give them some of your background information, but don’t tell them your life story.
If you’re reading this, you probably have an email address (or two, or three …). In fact, you’ve probably been sending and receiving emails for years, and you’ve definitely received some questionable deliveries in your inbox.
A sales funnel is the marketing term for the journey your potential customers go through on their way to a purchase. You start with a lot of potential customers who may have heard of your product or service. A smaller part of that group may want to learn more, and a smaller part of that group may actually contact you.
When you want to build an email list, you need good email marketing software. And right now, after carefully considering each email marketing service provider, I can confidently say I love Drip by Leadpages.
HubSpot is one of the industry leaders in giveaways (so it’s probably no surprise they’re industry leaders, period). In an article about email list growth, Ginny Soskey shared HubSpot’s two-part view of giving something of value to potential subscribers:
The first two parts are easy to find, and content is only as difficult as you make it. You can post blogs, items for sale, pictures, videos, or whatever you want. Opening up your own website gives you the potential to make money from the avenues I’m going to mention.
Having more options increased engagement, but FEWER people actually made a choice and purchased a jar of jam! So if people who are overwhelmed with choices often opt to do nothing, what is a marketer to do?
5) Reinvigorate a stale email list with an opt-in campaign. Do you have an older list that you think is mostly decayed? Create an engaging opt-in message and send it to your old list encouraging contacts who wish to re-opt-in and promising to remove all contacts who don’t respond. Though it might seem counterintuitive to remove folks from your email lists in order to grow them, emailing only engaged contacts could improve your deliverability and increase the odds of your email getting shared with those outside your current contacts database.
When you send an email, include a forward-to-a-friend link in case recipients want to forward your content to someone they think will find it interesting. Make sure the link directs newcomers to a page with your opt-in form.
The difference between Amazon and EBay is that EBay (though still filled with new items) is seen as a used marketplace between individual parties, whereas Amazon (which is filled with offers for new and used merchandise from the 3rd parties) is viewed as a Wal-Mart-type superstore. As a consumer, this difference leads me to use Amazon, so it only makes sense to target on my own demographic.
Universities are constantly looking for people to participate in their research studies. Often, participants will get paid. The best way to find opportunities is to talk to your local university or check out this page on Gumtree.
Also on the main page (and subsequent pages) is an ebook giveaway. The ebook is web-based so you can view the full thing in one click. At the end of the ebook is a call to action to sign up for email updates.
I’m glad to see such a good resource that does a great job of explaining sales funnels with attention to content. With so much competition out there because of how we all can leverage technology and the internet, providing valuable content to your audience, prospects and customers is key. Thank you for sharing your insight Jason!
Worth it’s weight in gold. These checklists provide you with examples and tips on how to fill in the blanks with content that is worth its weight in gold. Proven to make you irresistible to the world and attract high quality prospects.
While this is a relatively simple example, it still exemplifies the standard split-test for a majority of early stage startups. Sending out a test with four different variants to 1/8 of your subscribers doesn’t make much sense if you only have 300 people on your list!
Resending the email can yield big gains, since you can potentially reach subscribers who might have missed your first email. You could try a different subject line or slightly different content in the body. You’ll also want to segment out the responders—that could be just people who ordered, or everyone who opened or clicked.
Newsletter engagement is best measured by open rates and click-through rates. I’ve worked with some of the best lists out there: the Help Scout newsletter regularly reaches over 21%+ open rate, a tough number to crack in our industry.
Landing pages are single pages that you present on your website with one purpose in mind: getting a potential customer to take action. That could be to phone or email you about your service or to opt-in to a ‘free report’ or something similar.
The fact that Drift offers its services for free is quite unique. As I mentioned, plenty of companies do free trials, but few offer totally free services. For some smaller companies, they might never need to pay for Drift. Others may try the free version and decide to pay for more features, moving further down the funnel.
Use a reactivation campaign to gauge whether non-responsive subscribers are still reading (just not clicking through or tracking open rates), or if they’ve truly decided to opt out. An example from MarketingProfs is shown here. The language you choose can play a big role in how successful these campaigns are, so be sure to split-test a few versions to maximize response.
This is honestly one of the best articles I’ve read all year on increasing opt-in rates. And my attention span these days is quite brief. With such a busy schedule, I don’t have time to read junk. Thanks for the great tips!
In short: ClickFunnels is a click – based software, that you can use to easily create series of webpages that people have to navigate through in order to purchase a product, or join an email list, or a webinar, and you don’t need to know a single line of code.
Thats great to know Kevan. I’ve seen Buffer’s list grow from 10k to 30k quite quickly. Aside from 40+ landing pages, I’ve been having success with SumoMe Listbuilder. I’m going to test your Dreamgrow plugin now.
Also, on the pricing page, it’s unclear what the checkmarks mean. It’s safe to assume that these are the features offered and they extend across from another column. I mean I can intuit it, but can everyone? It may be easier and more clear to put checkmarks directly on the features in the plan.
As you might imagine, this isn’t necessarily a quick way to make money but once you’ve got a few investors in your phone book it can prove to be very lucrative in the long run. If you’re interested, I recommend reading this book.
AutoGrow helps small businesses, who don’t want to stay that way, grow with web marketing and sales funnel design services. We also write and publish free articles, videos, checklists and other resources daily to help you increase traffic, build your email list, and land more clients.
The above screengrab is from an article on James Clear’s site. Before you get to any words in the article itself, you’ve been hit with three CTAs for his newsletter. Clearly, email is a priority for him!
Wait a second. Most people who visit my site do not care about these links. They are here to learn about business. So we changed it to specific content pages that I know people who read my site would be interest in.
I have to point out here that this application has limited possibilities and I would say it has 50-60% efficiency. Sometimes, however, if it doesn’t find an email address of a given prospect, it will find a company domain or other employee’s email, wich, in turn, will let you guess the e-mail address you have been looking for.
A List Apart – A List Apart pays $200 for each accepted post. They’re not first on the list, because they tend to publish less articles, which means you have a smaller chance of getting accepted. Same guidelines as above, 1,500 word minimum.
Once you’ve figured out the goal, bottom, middle, and top of your sales funnel, it’s time to fill in the details. In keeping with our method of starting with the biggest pieces, I’d recommend you first turn your attention to one important (but refreshingly easy to create) building block. We call it the Micro Funnel.
Crazy Egg’s sales funnel is huge. They have an excellent blog with high-quality content. Their sales funnel actually starts at their blog. That means most of their traffic is coming from inbound sources like Google.
Remember that this is perceived value, so giving people things that cost you anything (except time) can still have this same effect. Apply this to your email marketing efforts by surprising subscribers with free stuff. Blog posts don’t count, because there is no surprise there; people EXPECT them to be free.
