I’m a wedding photographer and I’m researching new ways to funnel visitors by their current; challenges, position in planning their wedding and then addressing short term buyers vs longer cycle buyers who are researching etc. Do you have any advice or examples which could be useful even if a different industry? When I first wrote this article in 2011, I mentioned how the marketing copy for Crazy Egg’s heat-mapping feature could have been stronger by better explaining how the tool helps customers to increase conversions. As I just said to @kevanlee:disqus, to clarify, the reason I don’t like popups is when they restrict access to content. Email signups in nav bars, sidebars, and footers all make perfect sense to me. I know they work, but that doesn’t negate the need to handle things tactfully and care about user experience.
This example sample comes courtesy of my coworker who started signing up for Zipcar, got busy, and had to abandon the form. As a result, the email calls her back to the website with some lighthearted copy that nudges her in the right direction, and also reminds her of the value of using Zipcar — being economical and helping the planet.

In practice, the form validation of some web sites may reject special characters such as “+” in an email address – treating them, incorrectly, as invalid characters. This can lead to an incorrect user receiving an e-mail if the “+” is silently stripped by a website without any warning or error messages. For example, an email intended for the user-entered email address foo+bar@example.com could be incorrectly sent to foobar@example.com. In other cases a poor user experience can occur if some parts of a site, such as a user registration page, allow the “+” character whilst other parts, such as a page for unsubscribing from a site’s mailing list, do not.
I especially like the portion on the “about” page… most people leave this as a wasted opportunity. I see this on a majority of our client sites that the about us page is the second, or third most visited site (behind the homepage) yet most people leave it under-utilized.
